Comprising two stories, Ferndales and Revolution Femme. ‘"Ferndales!" Why was the word so awesome to me? I had not wanted to go; mother knew that very well; there were enough apocryphal stories about this place, let alone my brothers' (probably exaggerated) accounts of strange happenings; strange punishments; I had this feeling of extreme severity; unusual for our day but successful with a certain clientele of parent who favour ‘old-fashioned' approaches to discipline, who believe in the efficacy of strong teacher control with an eye to placing scholars in Sandhurst or in military careers predominantly; or in business enterprises where a sort of ruthlessly disciplined purposefulness is prized. I know I feared such a regime; but Phillip, now 16 seemed to survive, even thrive on it: so why shouldn't I?' -
