Reported by a runaway pupil to the police, she is subsequently arrested and sentenced to six years' hard labour. She relates the vile conditions in the prison and her own attempts at suicide. On her release, she enters into prolonged correspondence with a submissive German male. After the death of her parents she inherits a sum of money and is briefly united with her sister. She then takes a holiday in France where she has a lesbian affair with a prostitute who she birches for stealing from her.
