Had they bothered to read up to page four of the original preface, they would have seen that this makes reference to the notorious prostitute, Mrs. Theresa Berkeley, who is famed for the invention of the ÔBerkeley Horse,' a contraption for securing a culprit or victim for flogging and which can be adjusted to any angle. Mrs. Berkeley was active for a period of eight years between 1828 and 1836. In that time she earned the phenomenal sum in those days of £10,000, such was her skill as a dominatrix (and occasional submissive). On her death, the money was left to her brother, a missionary in Australia, who, on finding out how the legacy was earned, renounced all claim to it! The book contains a selection of fiction, verse and drama on the subject of flagellation.
